THROWBACK: WORKOUT CLASS UX

While the bulk of my day job is spent doing in-house branded items, occasionally I get a fun little side project handed down that allows for more creative freedom. This project was from a while ago (and I finally feel like I can share it—although I’ll still leave out the client name, etc.), but I was really proud of the outcome. I don’t work in the UI/UX realm frequently and this was a great exercise!

The Ask: As part of a pitch presentation, one of our sales team members asked marketing to come up with some new UI/UX designs for a boutique fitness facility. Designs should include active graphics for their large-scale projection wall and a new (at this point totally conceptual) fitness app.

Large-Scale Wall Design

The projection wall’s primary function is as a tool during the fitness class. While the instructors lead the workout, the class can reference a variety of information—including class leaderboard, current playlist, workout cadence, and all-time facility leaderboard.

The projection wall is incredible active (not quite interactive, but you get the idea). The leaderboard takes data from the equipment used in the class and updates live! The classes cadence scrolls across the top, guiding students to what they should be doing at that particular moment. And then the background is an ambient animation of ink-in-water—apt since the primary class taught is a rowing class.

At the end of the class, the wall will switch to the classes top four students with an encouraging message. Over to the left, information like the next class, today’s playlist, and a social plug are displayed. If one of the rowers from the day’s class broke a new facility record, they’re added to the right-side leaderboard.

Fitness App

Are you keeping up with the decade if your fitness facility doesn’t have some kind of app or social presence? Maybe? As part of this UI/UX package, I worked on a single preview of a possible accompanying app. The goal of the app would be to allow gym members to track long-term progress, encourage friends, easily book your next workout, and more… As an active user of FitBit and other fitness apps, I loved this part!

A couple features I wanted to include were the ability to message and encourage friends and fellow gym-goers through the app. There’s no better way to make sure that you get to the gym than to be held accountable by others. I also wanted an at-a-glance overview of our weekly workout—how many times you’ve been, what your best score or time has been, etc. Finally, since this app is for a specific boutique fitness facility, then users need to be able to quickly and easily book their next class.

It’s a little bit of social and a lot of wellness + fitness + challenging yourself. So what do you think? Ready to crush your next workout with this design?
